S. Jay Levy, Senior Counsel

Levy was dubbed the "doughty maverick" by Barrons for his willingness to ignore the consensus and his unmatched deftness at calling economic turning points during the 1950s and 1960s. The accolades continued as Richard Russell, writing in the respected Dow Theory Letters in the 1970s, declared, "In truth, S Jay Levy probably has the best record of any economist in the U.S." The New York Times noted in the 1980s that he "has compiled one of the best records in the country for predicting turning points of the business cycle in the United States for the last 40 years." Levy has throughout his career been sought out for commentary by public officials, private corporations, and the news media. He has been a consultant for a wide variety of business and financial firms, including Fortune 500 companies, major banks, and leading hedge funds. He has testified before Congress and has met with high-level congressional, administration, and Federal Reserve officials to discuss economic policy and to provide analysis of economic conditions. A 1942 graduate of City College of New York, Levy has taught courses, conducted seminars, and lectured on economic topics. He served as chairman of the Board of Governors of The Jerome Levy Economics Institute of Bard College from 1986 to 2001. Levy has written many monographs, articles, and columns over the years. He is the coauthor, with David A. Levy, of the critically acclaimed Profits and the Future of American Society, which was praised by such diverse readers as Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, William F. Buckley Jr., and columnist Jane Bryant Quinn. In 1991 Levy turned primary responsibility for the forecasting operation over to David Levy to devote more time to his research on policy issues. He continues to analyze the economy, advise the Forecasting Centers research staff, and contribute to The Levy Forecast™.
